D20070329A 06 T20070325 White Rock Museum & Archives White Rock Museum & Archives White Rock, Greater Vancouver area, Brithish Columbia, Canada 03/25/2007 *** History The Great Northern Railway (now the Burlington Northern Santa Fe) rerouted its Seattle-Vancouver line from an inland route to the shores of Semiahmoo Bay in 1909. The original depot soon proved inadequate, and a much larger station building was commissioned to serve the community. The new train station building was officially opened New Year's Day 1913. Because White Rock was an international port of entry, the east end of the train station building included customs and immigration offices, complete with a holding cell and barred windows. The western half of the station building consisted of a railway ticket office, waiting rooms and cargo areas. A unique feature of the original design was an open breezeway through the middle of the building. In 1971 passenger service to White Rock ceased. Burlington Northern moved their operation to the international border near the Peace Arch. The railway officially deeded the station building to the City of White Rock four years later. Seven decades of resisting the sea had taken its toll. Much in need of repair and slowly listing toward the beach, the City of White Rock undertook a major renovation of the train staiton in 1984. It now serves as home to White Rock Museum & Archives, which hosts over 50,000 visitors each year. See below picture for reference of above words. Amtrak's Champion lead by SDP40F # 642, followed by PC E-8 # 318, will shortly be on it's way from SCL-Amtrak station to the railroad yard in Saint Petersburg, Florida, 1974 Amtrak's Champion lead by EMD SDP40F # 642, followed by Penn Central EMD E-8 # 318, will shortly be on it's way from the SCL-Amtrak (former ACL) station to the railroad yard in Saint Petersburg, Florida, during 1974. The PC E-8 is coupled to an Amtrak shorty baggage car # 1,303, created from a U.S. Army Troop Kitchen Car. A SCL switcher will haul the train to the railroad yard, where it will be cleaned, serviced, maintained, repaired as required, watered and re-fueled for it's next day return trip North to New York City. The parallel track in the foreground is the station platform by-pass track that is used by freight trains or other trains that want to move around trains located at the station's platforms.
